Chinese Auction Tickets for Sale

We will be selling tickets for the Hope for the Holidays Chinese Auction on Wednesday, December 17th after school in the Senior High Library from 3pm to 4:45pm.  This is an opportunity for faculty and staff in the elementary and middle school buildings who may not get a chance to buy tickets during the school day to purchase tickets.  Tina Burns mentioned this at several team meetings over the past couple weeks, but I wanted to clarify the time and place for the auction and invite you all to come see the great baskets that were donated this year.  Tickets are 1 for $1, 8 for $5 and 20 for $10.  All proceeds benefit the Westmoreland County Children’s Bureau and the Food Bank.  Tickets will be drawn at 1pm during the telethon broadcast on Friday, Dec. 19th.

 

Counseling Center News

The American Legion has announced its High School Oratorical Scholarship Program for 2009.  The purpose of the program is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitiution of the United States through research and public speaking.  For more information, please visit the Counseling Center.  Application deadline is January 2, 2009.

The U. S. Department of Education, Federal Student Aid provides over $80 billion annually in financial assistance for college. To receive federal student aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible after January 1. There are three ways that a student can complete the FAFSA:

1.          Apply onlineatwww.fafsa.ed.gov

2.          Download andcomplete a PDF version of the FAFSA at www.FederalStudentAId.ed.gov (Note: PDF       FAFSAs must be mailed for processing).

3.          Request a paper FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at1-800--4-FED-AID        (1-800-433-3243) or1-319-337-5665.

 

Moody's Mega Math Challenge is a scholarship contest for high school students and they will be giving away $80,000 in scholarship monies this year. The competition is an internet-based program that requires students to solve real-world math problems in 14 hours. If interested, please visitwww.m3challenge.siam.org.The Challenge will occur on March 7 and 8,2009.

The Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers has five $1,000 scholarship available for students of PACB members. If you qualify and are interested, please visit the Counseling Center for application information. Deadline February 6, 2009.

Tired of filling out forms and waiting to meet with someone at college fairs? The National Association for College Admission Counseling(NACAC) has introduced technology that will eliminate this problem. If you plan to attend the National College Fair (NCF) at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center on February 5th or 6th, 2009, or any other NCF, please visit www.gotomyncf.com and complete the pre-registration information. You will receive a barcode that will allow colleges/universities to quickly scan and retrieve your information in order to expedite your visit.

 

Theatre/Music/Band News

ATTENTION STUDENTS INTERESTED IN A MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP: The Blackwood Music Scholarship is being offered to high school students intending to pursue a career in instrumental music performance. Scholarships in the amounts of $5000, $4500, $4000, $3500, and $3000 will be offered in 2009. Please visit www.blackwoodmusic.org for more information. Deadline is February 1,2009.

ATTENTION GUITAR AND PIANO PLAYERS:  Auditions for the High School Jazz Band will take place on Monday, December 15th in the band Room at 3 pm.   You must stop in the Band Room to pickup the required audition material.  Copies can be found on the blue shelf just inside the Band Room doors.

Any student interested in trying out for next year's Bandfront - Pantherettes, Majorettes, Silks, and Honor Guard - should see the tryout schedule posted in the Band Hall or on the Band's website: www.frband.com. Returning students and those auditioning for the first time are required to attend a mandatory meeting on February 3rd in the auditorium for more information.

FRHS Students Selected to PMEA and WCMEA Music Festivals

 

Four FR Band students will represent the school in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s District 1 Band East, hosted by Belle Vernon Area High School, January 28 -30.  Kayla Stramat (clarinet), Helena Snyder (clarinet), Josh Kline (alto sax), and Jonathan Xu (trumpet) will perform in a public concert under the direction of Mr. Bruce Yurko, Adjunct Professor of Music at Messiah College.

 

Three violinists from Franklin Regional, Jonathan Budd, Madeleine Kelly, and Alex Mitchell, have been selected to the PMEA District 1 Orchestra.  The students will perform under the direction of Mr. James Palmer, Associate Conductor of the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra.  The festival is being hosted by North Allegheny High School, February 5 -7.

 

Stephanie  Ashman (flute) and Tim Simpson (cello) will represent Franklin Regional in the PMEA District 1 Junior High Orchestra Festival at Pine-Richland High School, January 23 and 24.  The guest conductor will be Dr. Stephen Benham, Associate Professor of Music at Duquesne University. 

 

The Westmoreland County Music Educators Association’s Junior High County Band Festival will include five students from Franklin Regional High School.  Stephanie Ashman (flute), Jennifer Long (clarinet), Nicholas Scapellato (clarinet), Slater Simek (trumpet), and Alan Yan (trumpet) will perform under the direction of composer and arranger Brian Balmages, January 16 -17, at Norwin High School.

 

Club News

ATTENTION WIRC TEAM MEMBERS!!  We will have practice in the library immediately after school next Wednesday.  We also need volunteers to man the table at the Telethon Book sale during lunch next Thursday and Friday.  Please add your name to the sign-up sheet by the WIRC shelf in the library.  Thanks!! 

ATTENTION WIRC TEAM MEMBERS!!  The Five People You Meet in Heaven book discussion will be held in the library conference room during 5th, 6th & 7th period lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

SNAP members should sign up outside of Room 126 to sell ornaments during one lunch period next week. See Mrs. Polczynski if you have any questions.

The Reading Competition Team and the Fantasy/Creative Writing Club are raffling a Twilight poster and a Ben Roethlisberger poster like the ones that are on display in the library.  Tickets are 5 for a dollar and are on sale in the library.  All proceeds will go to the Telethon.

FOR ALL MATHLETES:  Please be advised that the next competition is on Monday, December 15th at Kiski.  All participating Mathletes should report to the lobby on Monday at 7:30.  If you have not yet turned in a permission slip for the event, please see Mr. Boggs as soon as possible.

ATTENTION FBLA MEMBERS: Please pick up your Regional Leadership Conference paperwork in Room 213 this week. This is for the competition at St. Vincent on January 7th. It must be filled out and returned by Monday, December 8th.

Spanish Club Members will be selling lollipops for 25cents a piece from now until the holiday break. All profits will be donated during the telethon. Members of Spanish Club, please see Mr. Stanczak or Ms.Yocco to get your lollipops and start selling.

ATTENTION STUDENTS! The Reading Competition Team and the Fantasy/Creative Writing Club are collecting gently-used books suitable for all ages and interests for the Holiday Telethon Book Sale. Please bring all donations to the library before December16.

Students participating in the English Festival are reminded to get their books and begin reading. Your first book should be finished by the week of December15!

Have you ever sat in class just wishing that youdidn't have to hear your teacher's voice? That dream can become a reality! Donate money to your teacher's jar in class or during lunch....any teacher with$100 or more in donations will have to be quiet all day Wednesday! Sports/Athletic News

The Franklin Regional Varsity ice hockey team won their fifth game of the season, defeating the Moon Tigers, 6-5, in overtime at the Airport Ice Arena on Monday night.  Luke Stickel had a hat trick, while Eugene Mack added two goals including the game winner in overtime.  Pat Coyne also scored, as the Panthers outshot the Tigers 39 to 31.  Goaltender James Orr stopped 26 shots on goal.  Steve Shirk had three assists, and Johnny Miller added two more en route to the victory.  Pat Coyne, Jordan Sirianni, Adam Baumgardner, and Pete Ellis each had one assist during the game.

Congratulations to the Competitive Cheerleaders for receiving a bid to Nationals in Florida this February.   The Competitive Cheerleaders will not have practice today (Monday) because of Santa's workshop at Newlonsburg. 

JUST A REMINDER TO THE JUNIOR CLASS:  11th grade physicals are past due!  Please turn your exam form into the nurse as soon as possible.

 

Booster News

The Boys Basketball Boosters will be selling Panther Pit t-shirts outside the cafeteria from Wednesday, December 10 through Monday, December 15 during all lunch periods.  T-shirts cost $6.00 each.  The ninth grade team opens at home on Tuesday, December 9 and then travels to Greensburg Salem on Thursday, December 11.  Junior varsity and varsity open on the road this Friday, December 12 at Plum High School.  Next Tuesday, December 16 they host McKeesport.  Check out the schedule at www.highschoolsports.net.  Contact is Sandy Stonebrook sstonebrook@comcast.net or 412-607-7647

The U.S. New & World Report has released a list of what it considers the best public high schools in America, putting some local high schools into silver and bronze categories.

Of the 670 high schools in Pennsylvania, only Julia Masterman High School in Philadelphia received a gold designation, ranking No. 66 in the nation. Twenty Pennsylvania schools received a silver rating, and 65 a bronze. Only gold schools were ranked.

Locally, the list includes the following high schools:

Silver -- Allegheny County: Fox Chapel Area, Hampton, Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny, Pine-Richland, Pittsburgh Allderdice, Upper St. Clair.

Washington County: Peters Township.

Westmoreland County Franklin Regional
