I was a somewhat concerned about sending an attachment along with the FRHS newsletter and sure enough, some of you had problems opening up the Senior newsletter – so I did a “cut and paste” of the original letter sent from the Counseling center. I didn’t spend a lot of time formatting this in the interest of time…. I hope this helps. Darlene Skupien.
FRHS E-NEWS Mon, Sept 8, 2008 Welcome to FRHS E-news… an electronic newsletter distributed independently by the members of your PTO. This newsletter is provided as a volunteer service to the senior high parents and other community members to keep parents up-to-date and informed about what is happening at the senior high level. Occasionally, there are mistakes, but we make every attempt to verify and publish accurate information on a timely basis. If you have news you would like to have published, please send your information to me at FRHSnews@comcast.net. Please remember, it would be helpful to have a minimum of a week lead time to publish the information. To subscribe/unsubscribe to the newsletter, please send email to FRHSnews@comcast.net. Thank you! Darlene H. Skupien, FRHS E-News Editor
COUNSELING CENTER
SEPTEMBER 2008
WELCOME BACK!
Senior year has finally arrived and the counselors are looking forward to seeing you again and helping you with college/post-secondary school applications. Senior conferences will begin immediately during study hall periods, but feel free to drop by our offices any time with applications or questions.
SAT Reasoning Test / SAT Subject Tests
You may take either the SAT Reasoning Test or the SAT Subject Tests on October 4th at Franklin Regional. Register online at www.collegeboard.com. Remember to use our SCHOOL CODE - 392835 and our TEST CENTER # 39-450 when you register. (Check with the colleges to which you are applying to see if you have to take the SAT Subject Test(s). Only certain colleges require it in addition to the SAT Reasoning Test.) Neighboring school districts will have both tests in November and December. Also, neighboring schools offer the ACT if you would rather take it instead of the SAT. Observe the deadline dates to avoid paying late fees. If you plan on taking the October test, the registration deadline is September 9th. Cost this year is $45.00 for the SAT Reasoning Test. Cost for the SAT Subject Test(s) is $20.00/exam
SCHOLARSHIPS
Periodically throughout the year, please check the large bulletin board in the Counseling Center for any scholarships for which you may be eligible. The Franklin Regional website will soon have a Counselors’ Section that will list current scholarship opportunities. Also, during your senior meeting, you will receive a list of scholarships open to Franklin Regional students. Try on-line scholarship searches, such as educationplanner.com; tuitionfundingsources.com; and fastweb.com. Please be aware that scholarship deadlines vary.
COLLEGE FAIR
Plan to attend the Westmoreland School Counselors’ College Fair to be held September 17, 2008, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., at the Westmoreland County Community College. Over three hundred college representatives will be there in addition to financial aid officers from PHEAA and loan officers from area banks.
Duquesne University is hosting a College Fair on Sunday, September 21, 2008, 1-3 p.m. at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THE BACK OF THIS NEWSLETTER FOR VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION THAT WILL HELP YOU WITH YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS!
COLLEGE APPLICATION TIPS!
1. If possible, TYPE your application, or print NEATLY in dark ink, or submit an electronic application.
Our school Code number is: 392835 Our school phone number is: 327-5456 extension 5006 (Counseling Center) Our school address is: 3200 School Road, Murrysville, PA 15668
Spell your Counselor’s name correctly: Telephone Extension Mrs. Danielle McCann 5026 dmccann@franklinregional.k12.pa.us Mr. Rob McClure 5008 rmcclure@franklinregional.k12.pa.us Mrs. Kristin Scott 5007 kscott@franklinregional.k12.pa.us Mrs. Ami Zachetti 5009 azachetti@franklinregional.k12.pa.us
Mr. Allan G. Mikach Director of K-12 Counseling/Health Services 7617 amikach@franklinregional.k12.pa.us
2. Be generous with postage ... at least two stamps on a business-size envelope, more for an oversize envelope. Applications that do not include postage will be sent through school mail, which adds a day or two more processing time.
3. If an essay(s) is required, type it (unless the directions specify, “handwritten”) even if you have hand printed the rest of the application. In the space provided for the essay, print or type “see attached page.”
4. If teacher and/or counselor recommendations are required as part of your application, give us the forms AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so that we can begin to work on them. Also give the teachers/counselor stamped envelopes addressed to your college choices. In all cases, allow at least a two-week turn-around time. We, too, are busy and cannot always write a recommendation the night before the mailing deadline.
5. Post-It-Notes are great if you have any special instructions for your counselor such as “ don’t include rank.”
6. Staple your check for the application fee to your section of the application, or pay for an on-line application with a credit card. Bring any completed paper applications to the Counseling Center. We will attach an Official Transcript, add any required counselor recommendation and put the entire application in the U.S. Mail. NOTE: Official Transcripts (signed and school-sealed) must go directly from our office into the U.S. Mail. We will be happy, however, to give you an Unofficial Transcript. Most applications go into the mail within three days after you turn them in, but do not forget the two-week allowance for recommendations.
7. If you file an electronic application, the college will still want to see a hard copy of your transcript. We need your written request with signature to mail a transcript. Some schools ask you to print out a signature page and the counselor section. Bring those pages to us, add stamps, and we will take care of the rest. Penn State PREFERS you to apply ON-LINE. If you apply on-line to Penn State, Franklin Regional is an electronic partner with PSU. As long as you sign the transcript release form, your counselor will complete the counselor pages on-line. You do not need to print out the PSU counselor pages. This is true only for PSU.
8. Helpful Hint: Include a stamped self-addressed postcard in your application for the college(s) to return to you when they receive your application. |
