Breakfast of Champions Meeting

The next Breakfast of Champions will be held Thursday morning February 12 at 6:30.  The committee is looking for volunteers to help with the following:

Set up--6-8 people (this will take about 1 1/2 hours on the 11th)
Pick Up Food at 6 am the morning of the breakfast -- 6 people
Serve that morning/clean up -- 4 people
Sign in Students -- 4 people

Footloose News

LAST WEEK FOR “FOOTLOOSE” PROGRAM ADS!

If you have not yet submitted your ad for the “Footloose” playbill, the deadline is Wednesday, February 4th. You may give ads to Mrs. Scheinert or Chelsea Watts at rehearsals, or send them via email to:  rwatts@frhsmusical.com .

SNOWFLAKE DANCE

SADD is sponsoring the 5th Annual Snowflake Dance on Saturday, February 21st aboard the Gateway Clipper Fleet.  Boarding begins at 6:30pm and the ship cruises from 7pm sharp until 10pm.  Dress is semi-formal..  Tickets are $25/person.  Checks only, no cash. Tickets sales will continue during lunches, until they are sold out.  If you have questions, please see Mrs. Pianetti in the nurse's office. Don't wait, get your ticket early!

Miscellaneous News

The Young Writers and Poets Club is accepting submissions for its annual literary and arts magazine.  The club is looking for stories of up to 2,800 words, poetry, artwork, or photography.  Submissions should be handed in to the library or Ms. White in Room 226 by Friday, March 6, 2009.

Art students from last semester are reminded to come and pick up ceramic work and portfolios from Ms. Shaw's classroom as soon as possible.

Middle School and Freshman Volleyball Tryouts will begin on Monday, February 2 at 6:00 p.m. in the Senior High School main gym.  If you are interested in being on the team, you need to attend these tryouts.

Congratulations to John Bollenbacher, Liza Gerber, Steve Meyers, and Jake Vrudney selected for the WCMEA (Westmoreland County Music Educator's Association) Junior High Choral Festival.  Public performance Friday, March 6, 7:30 p.m., Norwin High School, North Huntingdon, PA.

ATTENTION SENIOR INTERNS:  First semester interns will be meeting in the LGI during periods eight and nine next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Attendance at both meetings is mandatory and you must be ready to present your power point presentation.  Second semester interns will be meeting in the LGI during periods eight and nine next Thursday and Friday.  Attendance is mandatory and internship placements will begin on Monday, January 26.  If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Seighman in Room 219.

ATTENTION STUDENTS:  The snack room in the cafeteria is now open after school until 2:45 p.m.

Any student interested in trying out for next year's Bandfront - Pantherettes, Majorettes, Silks, and Honor Guard - should see the tryout schedule posted in the Band Hall or on the Band's website:www.frband.com. Returning students and those auditioning for the first time are required to attend a mandatory meeting on February 3rd in the auditorium for more information.


COUNSELING CENTER NEWS:

 The Westmoreland County Area Labor-Mangagment Committee is offering a $500 scholarship to a Westmoreland County resident who is planning to pursue a degree in industrial and labor relations, human resource management, business, public administration, pre law, or other closely related field.  Applications are available in the Counseling Center.  Deadline is April 8, 2009       

America's Milk Processors (the folks who bring you the "Got Milk" and Milk Mustache ads) and USA TODAY are pleased to bring you the12th annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" (SAMMY) 2009 Award Program. 25 winners will receive a $7,500 college scholarship, an invitation to attend a SAMMY 2009 weekend at Disney in June 2009 and an opportunity to be pictured in a special congratulatory Milk Mustache ad in a June 2009 edition ofUSA TODAY and other national publications. PenSPRA Scholarships Available: PenSPRA is pleased to announce the beginning of its annual scholarship contest. Scholarships will be awarded to six worthy high school students who plan to pursue a career in a communication field (i.e. journalism, English, public relations, advertising, graphic arts, etc.) Each scholarship is worth $500.  The Audubon Society for Western PA is proud to announce the 2009 Beulah Frey Environmental Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who are interested in furthering their students in an environmentally-related field. For more information, please visit www.aswp.org.

 Columbia University has announced their summer high school programs for 2009. They include pre-college courses for grades 9 - 12.If interested, please visit www.ce.columbia.edu/highschool

 The Pittsburgh Federal Executive Board is sponsoring an "Outstanding Asian American Student" Award that will recognize outstanding junior and senior Asian-American students. Their committee will choose a winner based on academics, extra-curricular activities and community service achievements. If interested, please visit the Counseling Center for an application. Deadline is February 13,2009.

 Attention all students interested in attending Northern Westmoreland Career and Technical Center: On February 22, 2009, the Counseling Center will be taking interested students to the NWCTC building for atour of the facility. The bus will leave FR at 7:45 a.m. and return at 11:45a.m. If interested, please visit the Counseling Center for a permission form and further information.

 National Association for College Admission Counseling will be hosting a National College Fair at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center on Thursday, February 5th and Friday, February 6th.Make sure you pre-register online at www.gotomyncf.com. Visit www.nacacnet.org for more information.

 

Sports News - Wrestling

 Thanks to everyone for all their help and donations for the tournament yesterday and Friday night. Franklin Wrestling hosted another successful Top 100 because of all the hard work from our parents and wrestlers. We had many nice compliments from people at the tournament and on the PYW website.

Special thanks to our JV and High School table workers who gave up their Saturday to help out the JO program. We couldn't do it without your help!! Congratulations to Franklin Regional Wrestlers and Coaches- THIRD PLACE TEAM TROPHY!!

More Wrestling news… Senior Night Wed, Feb 4th

There will be a senior night celebration on Wednesday. after the home match against West Alleghany.
Parents of Seniors: please decorate a poster to display of your son on senior night.  All: please stay after the match for Pizza and Wings to recognize the seniors.

Franklin Regional Ice Hockey 

The Franklin Regional Varsity ice hockey team won its ninth game of the season, defeating Wheeling Central Catholic, 12-1, at the Center Ice Arena on Friday night.  The Panthers outshot Wheeling, 54-19. Steve Shirk led the offense with 5 goals, while Johnny Miller, Chad White, Pat Coyne, Anthony Talamo, Eugene Mack, Ryan Crossey, and Mike Adams also scored a goal apiece for the Panthers.  Johnny Miller, Chad White, Luke Stickel, and Eugene Mack each had 3 assists, while Anthony Talamo, Adam Baumgardner, Pete Ellis, and Mike Adams each had one assist during the game.  Goaltender James Orr stopped 11 shots, shutting out Wheeling in the first two periods.  Max Zahrobsky had 7 saves while in goal for the Panthers during the third period of play.

 

Next, the Panthers face off against Montour on Friday, February 6, 2009 at the Center Ice Arena.  Game time is at 8:15 P.M.

 

  Baseball Booster Meeting

The Franklin Regional Baseball Boosters will be holding their monthly meeting on  Tuesday, Feb.10th at 7:30pm in the Sr. High School Library. Head Coach Larry Wayman and Coach Ed Carr will be there to speak about the upcoming tryouts and the American Legion program. Any parent who has a child trying out at any level is encouraged to attend.
